It occupied most of the morning’s teaching and was in contrast to the creative part of the curriculum. Warren Lamb loved it. It seemed to him then as it still does, essential basic training. Once established in the body, movement scales are there for life, just as once we learn to swim or ride a bicycle we never forget. Most of the students at the Art of Movement Studio had a direct interest in dance. Some were aspiring professional dancers, such as Ronnie Curran, who had been selected by Lisa Ullmann as a dancer with outstanding potential.

With the boundaries of Eastern Europe re-drawn after 1918 his nationality, which he changed more than once, was always a problem, and he applied for German nationality. This was eventually granted in 1935, and in 1936 he was put in charge of part of the dance arrangements for the ‘Hitler’ Olympics.

He was at the height of his eminence in German dance, his name was known throughout Europe and he had friends in high places. Even as his fortunes soared there was evidence of his eventual fall from honour. The glittering spectacle of 1000 dancers in 22 groups he had arranged for the opening of one of the Olympic venues, the Dietrich Eckart building, should have been a crowning glory, but was cancelled after Goebbels and Hitler watched the dress rehearsal. It was deemed to promote Laban’s ideas rather than National Socialism.
