If you don’t have a clear cue that your dog is free to do as he likes, he will always be guessing when he can stop doing whatever you are asking for. He will guess at which hand movements or changes in your voice or stance he can seize upon as a cue. He will often guess wrong, and you will get annoyed at him for “blowing you off ” in the middle of a training session. If, on the other hand, you consistently require your dog to continue doing whatever it is you are asking for until you give a specific release cue, such as “OK,” “Free,” or “Go Be a Dog,” your dog will relax and just keep working until told to stop.

I do use luring to train my dogs, but there are limited instances where I will introduce it. Especially in the beginning stages, it is more important that your dog learn how to think and offer behaviors than how to do any particular behavior, and luring is not the best way to those goals. We will discuss the proper place for lures later in the book. These are places where it is good training economy to think about using a lure. Dog trainers will debate hotly over whether free shaping or luring is the better method of training any particular behavior.

Everyone starts out a little clumsy—remember my friend who kept trying to click the food and feed the clicker to her dog! You will get the hang of it, I promise. You will get better and better at it until the click becomes an automatic response that you do not have to think about. If you want to do some “extra credit” work on your clicker skills, you could practice while watching TV—pick one behavior and click that.
