Unlike many earlier analyses, recent criticism of mysticism often develops interpretations which are neither hagiographical nor simplistically reductive. These readings are frequently informed by psychoanalysis and/or feminism, but although they do not take the orthodox position of the Church, they are nevertheless sympathetic to the mystic and her text and do not merely discard her voice as impossibly distant or, even worse, hopelessly pathological.
From a more recent perspective, Angela of Foligno's works have usually been issued by publishers affiliated with religious orders. An important exception to this rule is the anthology edited by the noted scholar of spirituality Giovanni Pozzi and published by the Italian high-brow house Adelphi in 1992 as Il libro dell'esperienza, or The book of experience.
