Because the spores and sporocarps of VAM fungi are large, often similar in size to insect eggs, and because they will be concentrated in the rhizosphere where many ants construct their nests, it is important to know if any ants forage for these fungal spores. If ants forage for the fungal spores and destroy them, it is possible that this activity may slow the development of the mycorrhizal/crop association in newly planted fields. On the other hand, McIlveen and Cole (1976) and Hoffman and Carroll (unpublished) found large concentrations ofVAM fungi in ant nests, and the suggestion that ants may disperse viable spores has intriguing potential for improving mycorrhizal establishment in fields.
